Tibet is a region on the Tibetan Plateau in Central Asia and part of the People’s Republic of China. It is known as the “Roof of the World” because of its great altitude. The landscape is spectacular, dominated by the Himalayas, with stunning views. Its lakes (including Namtso, the highest saltwater lake in the world), rivers and glaciers offer unique scenery to explore and photograph.
Altitudes in Tibet range from 3,000 to 5,000 metres above sea level, with the capital Lhasa at 3,650 metres. The climate is generally cold and dry, with low temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Winters are long and harsh, summers short and cool.
Tibet has an estimated population of about 3 million, most of them Tibetans who practise Buddhism, along with a significant Han Chinese minority.
Tibet is a centre of Mahayana Buddhism, with many monasteries and temples that offer a deeply spiritual experience. The Potala Palace in Lhasa, the traditional residence of the Dalai Lama, is one of its most iconic sights.
With its rich cultural heritage and striking natural beauty, Tibet is an unforgettable experience for any traveller looking for something unique and spiritual.
