Moldova is a small, landlocked Eastern European country with a rich culture, between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the east. Its border with Romania follows the Prut and lower Danube rivers. It covers 33,843 km² and has 2,512,800 inhabitants. Its capital is green Chișinău, in the south-centre of the country, which has one of the highest shares of natural landscape of any city in Europe, including 23 lakes!
Moldova is a hilly plain, with an average altitude of 147 metres and a highest point of just 429 metres. From hills and rich vineyards to calm rivers and historic landmarks, its beautiful landscapes offer plenty of natural beauty to explore. Forests cover about 11% of the country, mostly in the centre and north, while the south has a steppe zone. Moldova also has 2,200 natural springs, with healing properties similar to the world-famous mineral waters of Borjomi in Georgia.
The climate is mild continental, with an average annual temperature of 8-10 °C. The coldest month is January, with average temperatures roughly between -3 °C and -5 °C, while July is the warmest at 19-22 °C. For travellers sensitive to sudden changes and extreme temperatures, Moldova is a pleasant, cool and green choice!
