Lithuania is a country in northeastern Europe and one of the three Baltic states. It borders Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Russia, covers 65,300 km² and has 2,886,515 inhabitants. Its capital is youthful Vilnius; other major cities are Kaunas and Klaipėda, an important port. The official language is Lithuanian, one of the Baltic languages.

Lithuania is synonymous with green: its cities not only have plenty of green spaces, they are practically set in nature. That is why Vilnius is often called “a city in the forest”. Of the 397 square kilometres the capital covers, only a fifth is built up; the rest is pure, untouched nature. No wonder Vilnius ranks among the cleanest cities in Europe for air quality, and almost all Lithuanian towns have generous green spaces to escape to.

Lithuania has a typical European climate with continental influences: warm, dry summers and fairly harsh winters. Summer temperatures are usually 17-25 °C but sometimes rise to 30 °C or more, with mostly sunny, dry weather and occasional evening thunderstorms. July is the warmest month (average 18 °C) and January the coldest, usually around -5 °C, sometimes dropping to -20 °C or below with heavy snow or even blizzards. For anyone looking for a cool escape into nature with all the comforts of the city, Lithuania is a destination to keep in mind!
